What book(s) most influenced you as a writer?
Some years ago, I read Robin McKinley’s first book, Beauty. It’s a little gem of a YA novella that forever hooked me on the Beauty and the Beast theme. My first published novel, A Bed of Thorns and Roses, is a historical romance set during America’s Gilded Age. It follows the Beauty and the Beast story fairly closely.
Apparently, one book wasn’t enough to get Beauty and the Beast out of my system. My second full-length novel is titled—wait for it—The Beast. This book is the first in my fantasy romance series, The World of Pangaea. Despite its title, the book doesn’t follow the Beauty and the Beast story quite as closely, though it deals with the theme of redemption through love. My hero is really beastly. His father subjected him to horrible abuse throughout his childhood and youth. As a result, he suffers from what we now call post-traumatic stress disorder. He lives with a hair-trigger temper that sends him into fits of rage and causes him to commit acts he later bitterly regrets. He’s the darkest hero I ever have or ever hope to write. Thankfully, the hero of the second book in my series, The Savage, is anything but savage. He’s the exact opposite of my hero in The Beast and very easy to love.

What book do you read over and over again? A debut novel by Toby Barlow called Sharp Teeth. It’s the only book I’ve ever read straight through three times in a row. I rarely buy hardcover books any more, but when I came to “The End” for the third time and immediately flipped back to page one, I decided it was time to buy it, and I returned my library copy. I said all that before describing the book, because when I tell you, you’ll probably have the same Say What? reaction I did when I first heard of the book. It’s a story about werewolves set in modern-day L.A. and written entirely in blank verse. Please don’t let that turn you off. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read, and it’s beautiful. I still dip into it every so often, and I’ve probably read through it half a dozen times by now.

Tuesday/Thursday Trio-
1)      Movie- I can’t name just one! I love comedies, though really good ones are few and far between. Legally Blonde; Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels; A Fish Called Wanda; and here are some more obscure ones that are worth searching out: Jabberwocky (with Michael Palin); Death at a Funeral (NOT the American remake but the original British comedy starring the actor who played Darcy in Pride and Prejudice); and an indie production called A Film with Me in It, great if you like those English farces in the tradition of Kind Hearts and Coronets, where people keep dying off hilariously.
2)      Music- The Beatles, always and forever; Brahms; current favorite performer: David Garrett (Sometimes the gods walk among us. He is Apollo and Adonis rolled into one, I’m sure of it.)
3)      Decadent Dessert- Any kind of pie made by Sweet Magnolia, the world’s best pie shop, which is fortunately (or unfortunately) just down the street from me.

What’s the most interesting or bizarre bit of trivia you’ve learned from researching for a novel?
Really, it’s almost too gross to share. The second novel in my series, The Savage (coming in the late fall), takes place in the rainforest. There are really heinous parasites there, and my heroine keeps refusing to remove her ugly woolen cap the whole time she’s there. I knew she had a good reason for this but didn’t understand until I finally came across a news article about a story that happened recently. A woman vacationing in Peru had a fly get in her ear. She didn’t think anything of it until she got home and started having horrendous headaches. The MRIs showed she had maggots hatching out in her brain. Yuck! Sorry, I’ve probably put you off your dinner now. If you’re not so squeamish and want to know more, here’s the link to the news story: Flesh Eating Maggots

Novel on your Nightstand:
Who/what are you currently reading? Actually, it’s a book I’m re-reading. The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. It’s one of those books I study for craft {Tweet This}. I’ve never read any other book that takes me as deep into a character’s psychology. It’s written in third person POV, not first, but stays in the title character’s perspective the entire time. It’s claustrophobic and enthralling. I won’t say anything more because I don’t want to give away any spoilers. Just read it!

Whom would you cast as your Main Characters/Hero/Heroine if your book became a movie?
Chris Hemsworth, as he looked in Thor, definitely. He’s exactly how I imagined my hero, King Armander, in The Beast. And his brother Liam would be perfect to play Armander’s younger brother, Aurik, who is a secondary character in The Savage, and the hero of the third book in the series, The Swordmaster’s Daughter. I’m definite on the hero, but in a complete quandary for my heroines. If anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

The King’s Witch: A Short Story Introducing The World of Pangaea

The Knowledge. It shows her what has been, what will be, and--even more fearful--what may be. Some call it a gift, but Koreen knows better. The Knowledge is a curse.

Her story is a tragic one; The Knowledge has revealed as much. Though she cannot save herself, she may yet save others. Then her sacrifices were not in vain.

An unspeakable evil is about to overrun the earth, while the only man able to defeat the demon hordes remains ignorant of his destiny. The future depends on her ability to convince him of the truth. But will the young king listen? Especially since he has sworn death or exile to all who practice the black arts.

King Armander finds it difficult to believe the vile creature standing before him was the dead king's consort. She seems more demented than evil, and unaware her life hangs in the balance. His sense of justice demands he allow her to plead for herself.

"Can you tell me, Witch, any reason why I should spare your life?"

As soon as she speaks, he regrets his question. She reveals his past, and the dark deed no one else could know he committed. Her knowledge of his secret adds weight to her dire prophecy: that with her execution, he will lose his only ally in defeating the dark forces loosed on his kingdom. His own life, in fact, will be forfeit.

Does he dare defy his own edict to save himself and his people? Can he trust the woman known to all simply as The King's Witch?

Reader's caveat: This story contains a single sex scene that is fairly graphic and may be disturbing to some. Those who prefer to avoid such content and those under 18 please be advised, this story may be inappropriate for you.

The Beast, Book One of The World of Pangaea

Young King Armander inherits the throne determined to restore his kingdom to its former glory. The years of abuse suffered under the old king’s reign have taken their toll on his people—even more so on Armander. The torments visited on him by his demon-worshipping father have disfigured his soul and left Armander with an enduring anger that no longer has a target. His barely contained rage, unleashed at the slightest provocation, has earned him a name whispered behind his back: The Beast.

When Armander learns a neighboring king has plotted his assassination, he demands the king’s daughter as reparation. Immediately captivated by the beautiful princess, Armander discovers it is he, in fact, who has become hostage to her charms. As his love for her grows increasingly apparent to those around him, Armander fails to realize Princess E’laiahna has powerful enemies within the palace, men who will stop at nothing to keep her from becoming Queen. Yet only one man can drive her away forever—the one people call The Beast.

Thursdays with Taryn~ Join me in talking about nothing much... #Life #Time #Determination #Blessings

I honestly don't know what to write about anymore. I used to post blogs almost daily and never failed to ramble on about something. That was also during a time in my life when I was most productive in my novel writing as well. Perhaps I need to do this as an experiment to see just where my thoughts veer off the path today. And maybe I need to do this more often to keep the writerly juices flowing...

We'll see...
I've still been struggling with myself- my journey- as a writer. I finished the edits of Love By Design a while back, but I withdrew into myself and I'll admit, I've been suffering with a bit of self-doubt that I'm just starting to feel lifting its weight off of me.

I've been in avoidance mode, or it feels that way. If I don't think about it, maybe my not-up-to-snuff stories will just vanish. I've let this drag me under the tow for a while now, but I think I'm starting to resurface and I'm catching my breath again. Perhaps I will find my inspiration and desire once more and stop letting the childish part of me wallow in massive heap of self-pity. I have work to do, it's just a matter of slapping myself around some and knocking the good sense back into me.

I know it does me no good to wallow like I have been, but I just feel at a loss, uncertain where I'm heading with my writing and my life, and sometimes I feel like I'm going at this all wrong, or totally alone. A lot of the time, it looks something like this blurry mess below- rolling down a secluded back road, a solitary traveler with a dirty windshield who's moving so swiftly I can't enjoy the scenery or stop to think for a while. Maybe that's just Life whisking by and it's pulling me along with it whether I want to go that fast or not.
It would be great if Life would slow down for us, but it doesn't. If we don't enjoy it, it will get away from us and that goes for all things- whether it's enjoying the flowers blooming in your yard, a quiet sunset, watching your children grow up, celebrating another year of marriage, finishing those novels you set out to write from the heart, cherishing the time with your parents, siblings and extended family and friends.

We need to make the most of all the time we have in this Life~ relish it, enjoy it, revel in it, rather than wallow in the muck and mire, allowing the negative to suck us under and try to drown us.

Take time to breathe today, look around you and count your blessings!
I know I'm going to because I have so many wonderful things to be thankful for.

Thursdays with Taryn~ The Older I Get #life #distraction #learning

Life's been smacking me around a bit lately- so much so, that my writing, edits and anything to do with my stories has taken the backseat to everything else life is throwing at me. There are some days that I'd love to just curl up in a ball and sob the day away because I just can't fit everything in. I can't be every place I need to be, or where I want to be for that matter.

My writing's suffering for the sake of Life in general- laundry, meals, school will be out soon for my kids, I've been making an effort to do yoga and dance exercise as well as dealing with emotional/hormonal issues and I have lost nearly 30 pounds (and sticking with this new lifestyle has NOT been easy!) and I'm trying very hard to learn to drive- as an adult - Which is VERY frustrating for me. (I practiced parallel parking for the very first time today and thought I might pull my hair out and grind my teeth down to nubbins! Oh, and the turnabouts...yeah...don't care for that EITHER! But I have to know it.)

So anyway...I might have mentioned this before, but when I lived in my hometown, I walked pretty much everywhere I went— to the store, work, wherever I needed to go, unless I was going somewhere with friends or family who drove. For me, there was no need or rush to get my license, though it would have made traveling more convenient and perhaps opened more doors for me career-wise, but then I never anticipated moving away from where I grew up and I had a teensy fear of driving to cap that off, so I didn't worry about it.
Of course, all that changed when I moved here, a good 2 1/2 hour drive from everything I knew. I never thought it was that big a deal then either, when I first got down here, but as time has marched on, it has become an issue for me. Living in the country is nice, but it places me far from being within walking distance of most anything. Even the closest gas station is a mile there and back and that is one LONG walk, lemme tell ya! I've walked it, and that was back when I still weighed a lot more than I do now!

I don't work outside the home, so that's seemingly convenient, but more and more these days I feel stuck and stagnant and often, when there are things I could go get or pick up or go do, I can't because I don't drive. And oftentimes, it makes me feel beholden to others, having to rely on them to the point that I feel burdensome and I HATE that feeling. I feel like I'm missing a keystone to what's essential to most every living thing- a sense of freedom and movement.

Now I'm here, nearing that big "black" milestone birthday in blah blah blah years, I have two kids in school and I live in the country- quite a ways from town and quite a LONG ways from my roots.

I used to think that being away from where I grew up would get easier with time, but the older I get, it actually seems HARDER. I've been away for almost 12 years, but there are days that make my heart ache so fierce, its hard to get through the day. Maybe it's because my kids are getting older, but maybe it's also because my parents are as well and life is moving too swiftly and it can easily get away from us before we realize it.

That fact does not escape me. Life is far too short and several things recently have reminded me that if you aren't living your life fully, then you need to stop and assess that, especially when you reach a point where you don't know what you're passionate about anymore- or when you don't feel passionately about your life.

I'm still learning...but sometimes I don't feel that I'm living and there are days I feel like a shell of myself. Think a lot of that is what's jamming me up creatively and until I sort myself out, or push through, it's just going to take time...I just don't want to waste time being unfulfilled and unhappy.

January Hotstepping out the Door on this Thursdays with Taryn #amediting

This year has gotten off to a fast start and stayed that way. I'm currently working on edits and revisions for Love By Design, as most of you know. I'm hoping to spread it around again and get a few more beta reads for it once I'm done running through this (*insert random double or triple digit number here) edit. I'm not going to set a concrete date but I'm hoping this baby will be ready to self-pub in the next 2-3 months.

Editing line by line and deciding what should go, what should stay, what should alter is time-intensive work. Some authors enjoy it, others dread it. I fall over in the category with those who'd rather pull their fingernails out with tweezers than edit- at least, that is, when it comes to my own work. This has kept me busy.

That's why I haven't been posting many new blogs lately because everyday I've been trying to keep up with myself.

This year ushered in a new phase for me. I know I tend to be a creature of habit- some good, some bad. One of those bad habits, overeating, not exercising & not having good portion control at my age, which can be a lethal combination, is a habit I can no longer allow myself the luxury of indulgence. So, as this year began, I started working out to my husband's Everybody Dance video game. It has an exercise program that you can set up a profile on and it keeps record or your approximate calorie burn each day that you do the dances.

Unfortunately for me, my sedentary lifestyle has pushed me to the most I've ever weighed in my entire life and that's putting undue stress on my knees when I do the dance exercise. I've tried and failed numerous attempts to lose weight before, but this year, I've got to do something and I was really enjoying the dance. I'm not coordinated by any means, but its fun and it doesn't feel like exercise though I end up sweating bullets by the time I'm done with a few rounds of low and intermediate dance combinations.

My weight is wreaking havoc on my knees though, so doing too much dance is a journey into immobility, while I let my ligaments or joints have time to recuperate, which takes a while. After a week of dancing daily, I couldn't squat down to get a pan from under the cabinet in the kitchen because my knees and muscles all locked up. So.....after 2 weeks of dancing and not being able to move, walk, bend, squat like a normal person, I'm changing it up.

I'm now doing yoga in the mornings to hopefully balance and relax my core, my joints and muscles and bring my body into alignment with what it should be. It's not easy but it's getting better and I'm still breaking a sweat. Maybe not as much of one, but I do feel that I'm gaining flexibility and that will help a lot when I finally feel I can get back to my dancing as well.

Add to this, I'm also doing that 2 week meal plan with Special K cereal (started it this week) and so far, the past few days I've cut back my calorie and fat intake by a LOT. How do I know if I normally don't count anything I'm eating? My stomach tells me, because I still find myself wanting to snack, a LOT, but I fight it and am finding the willpower to overcome the bad habit of shoveling it in without thinking about what it's doing to me. I've also been doing my best to discover alternate snacking choices that won't be as detrimental to my success. Air popped popcorn is only about 30 calories a cup and I can still use Kernel Seasonings on it, at 2 calories a teaspoon, so it's not too bad. I'm also eating more yogurt, apples, vegetables and the Chocolaty Special K Pastry Crisps are a great 100 calorie snack.

I hate counting calories and fat, but in order to make the changes, I need to see what I'm doing to myself. The biggest thing for me is that my 4 year anniversary of quitting smoking is also coming up in March and I keep reminding myself, that if I could quit smoking, I can move more and eat less. It's not impossible to achieve this and I want to be there for my kids a long time and I want to write more of the stories in my head and spend time with my husband, my family, my friends. That might not happen unless I take control of this now.

In other news, we're contemplating dropping our satellite company and going with Netflix and Hulu + because it would save us a ton of money and I recently turned down an 8-book publishing contract, for both my Love By & Pryce of Love series. Though I was flattered by the offer, I still find myself feeling that the journey to self-publication is the right choice for me and so I'm keeping my feet on this path. The weather's been crazy here in southern Kentucky and one day you could be out in the yard wearing shorts, the next bundled up in coats and scarfs. I have to wonder if the rest of this year will be as interesting.

So, that's just a little report on the things in Taryn's World and this is only January! The last day of January at that! It's heading on like a Hotstepper- and yes, I went there....

Have a wonderful "Little" Friday!

Thursdays with Taryn- Valerie Haight

Thursdays with Taryn
Valerie Haight
Taryn!! I’m soooo excited to talk with you about my novella HAPPENSTANCE that releases TODAY! I can’t think of a better blog to share than yours since my MC’s name is Taryn and you both are ah-MAY-zing and we are TMP sisters! WOOT!

*insert triple cartwheels here*

This is just good mojo and I’m so happy to be here today celebrating with YOU! We can talk more about the book later because right now, you’ve got questions for me! I loooove questions. Let’s go! :D

What book(s) most influenced you as a writer?
Divergent by Veronica Roth, False Memory by Dan Krokos, Patrick Lee’s The Breach trilogy. I got into this writing for publication business fairly late (two years ago) and Janet Reid was one of the first agent blogs I read every day. So naturally, I wanted to learn what worked. She is a lover of fast paced, cut-to-the-chase, tense novels and I wanted to learn how to write like that.

What book do you read over and over again?
There are only a few books I’ve read more than once. One is Sandra Brown’s Texas Trilogy. I really love how she makes you fall in love with all three characters when you think there’s no way you could possibly love the next one as much as the last. But you do.

Another is The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. Oh, the tragedies within and I can’t seem to get enough. I feel the Australian heat, hear the bustle of their dresses, smell the dust of the open prairies where the sheep roam. And a personal favorite of mine is by a lady I met while working at a video store when I was 19. She struck up a conversation when she returned “Bridge On The River Kwai”. She’d been imprisoned in a Japanese concentration camp and was writing a book about her experiences. When “Hell Came Twice” was published, I bought three copies and I’ve probably read Sonja Schulz’s amazing story at least four times.

Thursday Trio-
1) Movie- Gone With The Wind
2) Music- Opus 23 by Dustin O’Halloran
3) Decadent Dessert- Brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, sprinkled with pecans. Because I’m sophisticated like that.

What’s the most interesting or bizarre bit of trivia you’ve learned from researching for a novel?
In researching the Arkansas/Missouri railroad of the ‘30s and ‘40s, I’ve discovered many amazing facts like security for hauling gold bars back then was a hired bounty hunter with a shotgun. Of course, I’m taking advantage of THAT!

Novel on your Nightstand:

Who/what are you currently reading?
Chocolate Covered Baloney by K.D. McCrite. She is hilarious and I happen to know her personally which is a double treat! Her writing is superb, snappy and super entertaining. I’ve learned so much from her.

Whom would you cast as your Main Characters/Hero/Heroine if your book became a movie?
I wouldn’t be able to breathe if my book became a movie, much less cast characters! But…if I was forced, I’d choose Kate Beckinsdale for Taryn, Chris Hemsworth for Devin and Chris Pine for Wade because of his dry and brilliant sense of humor.

Thursdays with Taryn~ Halfway There #NaNoWriMo

Are we about ready for Thanksgiving next week, peeps?

Already, today marks the 1/2 mark of NaNoWriMo- Day 15- on which, if you go by the minimum amount of words required to write 50K words by Day 30, you should be sitting somewhere around 25,000 words. Simple and it makes sense, eh? I have just a little under 27,000.

Yesterday was not a very productive writing day. I awoke feeling like my throat was doing this "allergic reaction" thing I've had happen in the past- where my uvula (punchy bag) elongates and hangs lower, nearly sitting on the back of my tongue. It's probably not life threatening, but it can be scary when it happens. I have trouble breathing past it because it wants to swing forward and causes me to gag, but when I swallow, it feels like a lump, like I'm going to swallow my uvula and choke to death on it because it falls back and covers the windpipe.

I never quite figured out exactly what caused it to happen the first time when I was in my early twenties, but after seeing a doctor about it, I was given corticosteroids for it and advised me to keep Benedryl on hand as well. It took about 2-3 days to clear up. He said it appeared to be some sort of "allergic reaction" to something I'd come in contact around that time and perhaps it was something I never had used/eaten/etc. I avoided certain things- such as Herbal Essence shampoos, Baby Ruth Candy bars, Rally's burgers and fries. I was a smoker at the time though, too, and I often wondered if I might have smoked one too many cigarettes the night before in the cool night air, but who knows. I'm not a smoker anymore though, so that would not explain it away now. I've also since given Baby Ruth the benefit of the doubt and didn't have trouble with it, but as for the other things- I typically avoid them.

That's not to say it's never happened again, as yesterday morning proved. From time to time I have had a flare up and I simply attribute it to allergies of some sort and pop a Benedryl capsule. That usually does the trick, but therein lay my problems with writing yesterday- between the intense grogginess and my eyes being itchy and blurry, I also had the urge to curl up in a ball and go to sleep beside the cat. I'm sure she wouldn't have minded at all, but I fought to stay awake so I could write and then still couldn't fight my way through the haze that fogged my thoughts. It sucks so bad when I can't seem to compose a coherent thought or put down more than a few mediocre sentences.

I definitely need to get more writing done. This weekend and into the following week I have cookies and treats to prepare for family and friends I will see around Thanksgiving. I have travel and hopefully the weekend after Turkey Day, I will have the energy to decorate my Christmas tree and hopefully get the outdoor decorations up as well.

I also have some really exciting plans in the coming weeks- some really cool holiday surprises that might include something like autographed print copies of Castaway Hearts and a few special gifts as we get further into the festive spirit of the holidays. You'll want to stick around to find out more about my upcoming

Christmas with Catherine & Dawson Giveaways

So definitely stay tuned for news about that!
Here's to getting some writing done today.
Happy Writing fellow NaNovelists!
Happy Reading fellow Bookworms!
