HEART OF MERCY~ #author @CCMarksWrites #NewRelease #dystopian #YA

Charlie Little exists in a dangerous world. Her best chance of survival is to disguise herself as a boy and guard her secrets well. Yet just when things can’t possibly get worse, they spin completely out of control.

With Zeke and her sister Star by her side and the fresh memory of Thomas’s kiss still on her lips, she narrowly escapes the horrid plans of Jonas Bannon, a monster of a human being. Forfeiting the safety of the community, they leave and begin the search for the city of Mercy, the one secure place Charlie knows. However, as she struggles to reach her sanctuary, doubts creep in that anywhere is truly safe. If the Draghoul don’t get them, the human scavengers just might, and the assumption Mercy will be a place of protection could be the most dangerous risk of all.

Nearly a year ago, I had Young Adult author, C.C. Marks by for a Tuesdays with Taryn Q&A and talked a little bit about Mercy and Edge of Mercy, her Intro and 1st novel in her young adult dystopian series. Well, she has recently released the 2nd book, HEART OF MERCY and I've already started reading it.

Doesn't she have GORGEOUS new covers???

I absolutely LOVED the story thus far and I'm eager to get back with Charlie, Zeke and her baby sister Star as they journey out of the community and toward the city of Mercy, where Charlie hopes to find safety and sanctuary for herself and her sister.

If you love young adult futuristic romance and adventure, this is definitely one to check out!

The Fabulous @kallypsomasters #author of the #RescueMe Series #Military #BDSM #EroticRomance

Where do I even begin?

I read all kinds of books, but until my friend and fellow Kentucky author, Kallypso Masters started working on her Rescue Me Series, I hadn't really ventured too far into reading erotic romances. Yes, I've read other books with very sexy relationships and alternative lifestyles (vampires, dragons, weres, menages, poly-amorous relationships) but I just hadn't been brave enough to dip my toe in the more sensuous and most certainly more adventurous waters of erotic novels that include bondage, ropes, whips, chains, handcuffs and so much more.

Not that my freaky flag doesn't flutter (trust me it does!), but because I wasn't sure where I draw the line at what's sexy/romantic and what goes too far, I veered away from books of that vein for a while. There are certain genres I could never read and I know this much about myself, but reading this kind had me a little nervous, but eager. I'd heard awful things about some of the other books in this genre, so, what if I didn't like it?

Or the bigger what if- what if I did like it, A LOT?

I mean, I write contemporary romance, for the most part, with very "open-door" sex scenes and description, but the kinky stuff? I figured there are others who are more well-versed in that sort of thing and I can leave it to them. Hehe. (If I ever DO write erotic romance, I will most likely take on a different pen when I'm wearing my sex kitten writing cap. {paws up, claws out} Rawr...)

But like most everyone says, you never know what you'll like until you try it.

I had all kinds of ill-conceived notions about what I might discover within the pages. This "lifestyle" is not one I'm accustomed to or acquainted with and I figured for sure it would make me blush and perhaps squirm a little, though I'm far from being prudish. It's Kally's enthusiasm as a writer, interacting with her readers, introducing and discussing these characters from the beginning of her journey to self-publication that brought them to life for me. And for many of her readers, who eagerly anticipate the release of each book. Her hands on approach and friendly personality made me want to read them.

And then I did. I started at the beginning, with Masters At Arms because, as Kally will point out, these stories have continuum- you can't just pick up in the middle and hope you understand what's going on with each couple because they all have intricate connections that bind them together from the beginning, first as comrades in arms, to friends, to heroes, to family. For me, this is no ordinary series of books.

Now this is not so much a review as it is me just singing the praises of a fellow author who inspires me, with her writing, the depth of her characters and the storytelling that is grounded in reality. I'm not going to break down a review of each book or give away spoilers- mostly because if I wrote it, I would want to post it to Amazon and dang their policies, they'd probably take them down, as I am also a writer and they'd smack my knuckles with a ruler for even trying....but I will say right here that I'm eagerly anticipating the release of the next book and I will definitely keep you posted when Kally releases it!

Now, what I will say is life isn't easy, but we all just keep going because we have to, because others expect it, or they "rescue" us from that edge when we're most vulnerable. Most often it's the strongest folks who have the softest hearts, the most haunted pasts and the invisible wounds that need time, tenderness, and sometimes the discipline to learn to cope instead of burying it so deep that it hurts us more in the long run.

Kally is a master at shaping this world into a virtual reality that you can grasp- that you can envision and understand. You will grow to love these characters. Every sympathetic and empathetic fiber of my being traveled this journey with them and I adore each of these books. They must be read in order, but they stand alone when it comes to the power behind each story, the journey toward healing and I have a feeling these will definitely become my re-reads.

I haven't gone through the things these characters have, but my heart aches for the pain they've suffered, the feelings of inadequacy, of not feeling worthy of love, of not feeling capable of loving again, whether because of self-image, mistakes in the past, physical ailments or deep dark secrets too painful and embarrassing to share with another living soul for fear of rejection. The Rescue Me series is truly that, a rescue mission to help each one of these men, and women, find healing and their true power- it might be hidden, and hidden deep, but they are all strong, even when they don't think they are. And luckily, these stories give us romance in the form of reality, of seeing that sometimes old wounds don't heal overnight but with someone who loves you beside you, someone you trust with every particle of your being, you can begin to heal and continuously find strength to replace those feelings of helplessness, weakness and fear in order to find that ongoing Happily Ever After.

Yes, these books center around the "Kink" lifestyle, but I know Kally's research is in-depth and if her representation is anything like most of those in the lifestyle- it doesn't seem like such a bad thing to me. I love sexy and sensual. I love down to earth REAL romance and real passion. You can say what you like about it, but these books went straight to my heart. In fact, reading these books, I've had some very eye-opening revelations about myself. Mind you, you won't find me in a kink club anytime soon (if ever) but there are definitely sexy and sensual things I hadn't considered... {wink}

To that, I say, THANK YOU KALLYPSO! You are awesome!

Okay, people, so here's my final thoughts on the matter- If you enjoy satisfying reads, stories that grip you, have you on the edge of your seat, that are sexy as hell, packed with emotions and utterly good for your soul, you have 4 VERY good reasons here to start reading The Rescue Me Series now to get caught up before Kally's next release! And best of all- The first 2 Books are FREE on Amazon!!! So hurry- get over there and get reading! You can click the images of each book to go to their Amazon buy pages.

USA Today bestselling author Kallypso Masters writes emotional, realistic Romance novels with dominant men and the women who bring them to their knees. She also has brought many readers to their knees--having them experience the stories right along with her characters in the Rescue Me series. Kally knows that Happily Ever After takes maintenance, so her couples don't solve all their problems and disappear at "the end" of their Romance, but will continue to work on real problems in their relationships in later books in the series. Kally also loves showing how there is never anyone so wounded that he or she can't find true love. Readers often write to tell her how the books have changed their lives or their perceptions of what matters in life.

Tag! You're it! on #ThursdayswithTaryn @JudyAlter

My dear fellow TMP author and friend, Judy Alter, recently tagged my WIP. As I don't have one at the moment, but will be working on the 4th and final novel in the Pryce of Love Series for NaNoWriMo next month, so I thought I would take this opportunity to get my thoughts flowing about it before I begin writing it.

Judy discussed her current WIP, the next installment of her Kelly O'Connell series, on her Tag! You're it! blog post.

Here goes my 10 questions:

  1. What is the title of your book? Heart of the Surf
  2. Where did the idea for the book come from? It sprang from Noah Pryce, the hero in the 4th book of my Love By Series. As his family situation grew and I realized he was just one of five boys, raised by their single mother, I knew the other four brothers would have to have their own stories. Mark, who's the baby, and a surfer, is the last of my boys, so it's time to tell his story.
  3. What genre does your book fall under? contemporary romance, but I like to believe that all my stories aren't just romance novels, but Life stories with heart. Their pasts aren't always spotless and sometimes it comes back to haunt them. Sometimes it's just a matter of the hardships they face that get them to their Happily-Ever-Afters. (I have high aspirations of transcending genre boundaries, can you tell? LOL)
  4. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? Oh, already I envision Mark Pryce played by Supernatural's Jared Padalecki, with soft tumbling sun-bleached wavy hair, a tan and that ultra cute dimpled smile. Alexa Stevens- his love interest, and his surfing competition, would be played by Kaley Cuoco, who plays Penny on The Big Bang Theory- a blonde, young and hip SoCal chick. She could give him a run for his money in the dimples department and together I think they'd make one really cute couple.
  5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of the book? For Mark Pryce and Alexa Stevens, the stakes are high during an invite-only surfing competition, but the title isn't the only thing at stake—they could both lose their hearts, to each other.
  6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agent? I'm hoping to self-pub both the Love By Series and the Pryce of Love Series, in consecutive order, though I have no scheduled release dates at the moment.
  7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? I haven't started this one yet, but it will be my current WIP as of November 1st when I start writing it for NaNoWriMo 2012. I'm hoping to have 50,000 written by the end of November, and finish it before the year is over.
  8. What other books would you compare this to in your genre? I'm honestly not sure. There are so many wonderful contemporary authors out there but I'm not sure who I could compare my own stories to.
  9. Who or What inspired you to write this book? Mark and Alexa. They've slowly been feeding me info about themselves and I know they're story needs to be told just as much as Mark's brothers, just as much as my Galloway sisters from the Love By Series and any other characters who've egged me on to put down their story to paper or screen.
  10. What else about your book might pique the reader's interest? The heroine was a teenage mother, so there will be tension. Mark's a good guy, but Alex's young daughter might not necessarily see him as a good guy, but rather the intruder who's trying to come between her and other mother.

I'm tagging 5 other authors and I will let you know when they post to their blogs. I'm hoping all 5 will participate! Would love to hear how things are going on their WIPs!

#ThursdayswithTaryn, Guest #Author C.C. Marks @CCMarksWrites author of Edge of Mercy

Thursdays with Taryn
C.C. Marks
Please help me welcome my fellow KY author (who is also an Indie) C.C. Marks, author of The Mercy Series. She just recently released the first book in the series- Edge of Mercy and is currently working on the next one (which I'm eager to get my hands on). I had a chance to sit down and read Edge of Mercy the weekend before last and all I can say is that it pulled me in from the start.

I'd never really given much thought to what dystopian meant before, but as I read Edge of Mercy, I could see the story playing out in my mind's eye as the characters came to life. The setting is in our world, but in the not so distant future, which they call home. It's a far cry from the world we know now.

I found the story in the same vein as movies I love such as Night of the Comet, Mad Max, Prayer for the Rollerboys, Aeon Flux, City of Ember, Logan's Run, Akira, The Fifth Element, I Am Legend, Book of Eli, and The Chronicles of Riddick. The list could go on and on of ones I hadn't realized were dystopian in their own way and I found that I LOVED this story just as much and could see this as a movie in its own right someday.

From the beginning you feel a kinship with Charlie and the seriousness of her plight. Survival means deception and secrecy, even to those she's grown to care about. Her life, her baby sister's life and her very existence, hangs in the balance of the day-to-day and striving to keep her secret from all in the community. Her secrets are just the tipping point when compared to the secrets of the Council and the horrible deeds and truths that are behind the infection that has turned humans into monsters. This is not a world I would ever wish to face, but at the same time, I found myself rooting for Charlie to find a way around the "rules" of the Council, to find a way to escape the horrid fate she will face if the truth of her identity is revealed and hoping that she can evade the dire consequences and come out unscathed on the other side. Being this is a series, that journey is only just begun and I look forward to reading the next book in the very near future.

Please enjoy C.C.'s answers on this Thursday with Taryn and if dystopian stories are your thing- check out Edge of Mercy. You'll enjoy it!

What book(s) most influenced you as a writer?
That’s a toughy. So many books were influential. As a romance writer, I loved reading books by Johanna Lindsey, Julie Garwood, and more recently, Kresley Cole and Rachel Gibson. But most influential would have to be Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. It was probably the first romance (*spoiler alert: doesn’t have a happy ending) that really wrung me out emotionally.

What book do you read over and over again?
As a card-carrying book-nerd, I have to admit the book(s) I’ve read over and over again are the Harry Potter series. I just love the humor, the hero journey, and the imaginative world shared in these books. Such great reads every time.

Thursday Trio-
1)      Movie- Shakespeare in Love
2)      Music- Anything by Paramore
3)      Decadent Dessert- Cheesecake Factory’s Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake

What’s the most interesting or bizarre bit of trivia you’ve learned from researching for a novel?
For my short story, Into the Fire, about two top chefs with a romantic past who go head-to-head on a televised cooking competition, I had to research so much about the terminology used by a professional chef. Devices like salamanders (the heat lamps that keep food warm while it’s waiting) and cooking methods like suvee (where food is sealed in a bag and put into a hot water bath) were interesting to learn about. I haven’t attempted what I learned in my own kitchen yet, but I understand the chefs on the Food Network a whole lot better now.

Novel on your Nightstand:
Who/what are you currently reading?
J. M. Madden’s A Needful Heart

Whom would you cast as your Hero & Heroine if your book became a movie?
Charlie is the heroine, and I picture Chelsea Kane (she had a short stint on Disney Channel’s Jonas Brothers show) with a very short hairstyle.

I have two heroes—Thomas would be played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zeke would be played by Zac Efron.

(click image at left for Amazon Kindle version)

Blurb:

Charlie hides her true identity, but her very presence places everyone around her in danger. With no other choice but to remain where she is, she stays with a community that might not be as benevolent as it appears. In this new and dangerous version of the world, where a friend might be an enemy and an enemy might be a friend, seventeen-year-old Charlie protects her baby sister and herself from grotesque monsters outside the community as well as human ones inside. Will the truth she discovers about her protectors save her or ultimately doom her to a fate worse than death?

#Writerly Wednesday- My next #WIP & Merc in Retro-Perils of the Universe #writing

I'm eager to start on my next novel, Heart of the Surf, the 4th and final book in my Pryce of Love series. Centered around the youngest of the Pryce brothers, and also the last to find love, the story will be a journey for Mark and Alexa Stevens, both of whom have their eyes on the prize of the elite and exclusive surfing competition. Little could they know that their love of sand and surf would also throw them together in another way. Already, I'm gleaning background information about my main characters at odd times, like while I'm showering. I learned a little something about Alexa's grandmother yesterday, so I can feel life being breathed into the story and the characters already.

But....

Mind you, I've never been surfing, never even been to a coastal beach, so this book will be a challenge and there will be research to do, so what better timing for research than just as Mercury is about to go Retrograde.

You see, silly or as superstitious as it might seem in me- I don't start new projects when good ol' Merc's in Retro because I have no desire to "redo" anything later. Not in a big way. There will be enough to be done with edits and polishing once I finish writing the story. Not to mention that I need time to research anyway before I start rattling on about things I know nothing about, but I'm intrigued by the idea of the life of a surfer, so the desire to learn is there.
Of course, writing will be easier still if I wait until after Mercury goes direct again anyway shortly after August begins and my children are back in school. The quiet writing time will help tremendously. It's honestly hard to work and concentrate on writing, to fall deep into my storytelling, when I have someone constantly asking me "Mommy, what's for lunch?" "Can we have a snack?" "Again, why can't we go outside in this triple digit heat?"

(Sandwiches, string cheese or yogurt, I don't want you to resemble the scorched grass in our yard that looks more like bits of hay than living green foliage)

Add to that, I'm also still researching self-publishing, so I have that on my plate, as well. Oh, and the weird dreams- so many of them lately, but I won't bore you with the bizarre and wacky details. I think it's a side effect of the planetary changes. I can feel in my bones. It always opens locked doors to the odd and unusual within me.

And so, I'm also settling back into our routine normalcy around the house after being gone to visit my family and friends in my hometown for 3 weeks. I'm still feeling sluggish today though my mind is racing that I have things to do, people to contact, etc...I can hope to find the balance, but not sure I ever will.

Hope you're having a great Wednesday! I can see the weekend
(and a lucky Friday the 13th) from here!

#WIPlash Wednesdays Complete Manuscript Number 11 #writing

Sunday I put the finishing touch on my 11th manuscript, Perfect Recipe for Love. Well, the official finishing touch- The End. Edits will ensue eventually, but for now I'm enjoying that sense of accomplishment that comes with putting the finish on yet another story...

Up next, I plan to start the 4th and last in the Pryce of Love series about the Pryce Brothers, manuscript #12 for me. Mark is up next, young surfer boy and he's going to have his hands full with the competition- "Alex" Alexa- who's the only girl in a male-dominated surf competition. You know she's going to be stubborn and bullheaded.

Considering I write by the seat of my pants though, that about all I can tell you at the moment. LOL I intend to invest in a few books about surfing, perhaps see if there are any videos on Youtube that might give me more insight and I have a bunch of websites bookmarked that list surfer lingo and information about the lifestyle. The last few books I've written had minimum research, but this one I will be giving a bit more time over to learning about the subject matter so I can present it in a realistic knowledgeable way.

I'm also endeavoring to learn more about self-publishing, and have currently been reading Smashwords Style Guide, just to familiarize myself with it before I attempt anything. Learning a little at a time, I'm really warming to the idea, but I'm not quite ready to rush in headfirst, but I'm seriously considering self-pubbing both of my 4-book series and after that, who knows. :o)

This week I'm still enjoying visiting with my parents and sister and friends and just enjoying touching base with my roots. The older I get, the more I need it. Hope everyone's having a great week! Stay cool!

#Favorite #Book #Spotlight Tales from the Flat Earth by Tanith Lee

Though I write romance, I tend to read a VARIETY of different genres outside my own for pleasure. A very good example is the wonderful fantasy of Tanith Lee's Tales from the Flat Earth:The Lords of Darkness and Tales from the Flat Earth: Night's Daughter. I recently discovered that there are a few short stories also involving the Flat Earth, but I haven't read them (but I'd definitely like to if I can ever get my hands on them.)

I was introduced to these books a little more than a decade ago, by a very dear friend who knew it was the sort of thing that would quench my thirst for well-written and beautiful fiction that would stick with me. He knew what lay at the heart of me and fed my need for rich worlds that come to life on the page where you are transported to the lush forests and gardens on Flat Earth and the dark glistening home of Azhrarn in the Underearth city of Druhim Vanashta that is made up of gems and dark metals. He knew I needed stories that stick with you long after you've put the book down, that inspire and encourage the imagination. These books feel like "home" to me and they always will and that's why they are still my favorites.

The stories within the pages of these two volumes are vividly depicted and when I read them, I'm easily sucked into the world of the Flat Earth and fall in love all over again with its inhabitants. Tanith Lee has such a way of using description that the very thought of reading the stories make me emotional and eager to flip through those pages again. I don't reread a lot of books, but I have reread these.

The stories are mythical/biblical fantasy meshed together, following the Lords of Darkness in their journeys among humans, all taking place between the three layers of the Earth at the time- Upperearth, Flat Earth, and Underearth.

Often these are short tales, but all inter-connected, explaining the trickery played upon humans in epic fairy tale fashion, but sometimes these stories tell too, the tricks the Lords play upon themselves and each other while they are busy wreaking havoc and cruelty upon the mortals of the Flat Earth.

I find these romanticized grown-up fairy tales dark, erotic and intriguing adventures that don't always have happy endings, and yet they are oddly satisfying, even when I'm moved to weeping.

One of my most favorite tales of all is The Parable of the Cat, which you can read at the link provided. I'm a cat person, through and through, and this story is just a small part of the whole that moves me unlike any other story I know. I can't reread it without sobbing like a child and it makes me wish, with some youthful part of me, silly as it may sound, that it were true.
If you've never read a Tanith Lee novel, I would definitely recommend these volumes. Finding the set as a whole is rare, so you might want to check with a library to see if they have copies.

What are your favorite genres? If you're a writer, like myself, do you tend to read within your genre, or do you also enjoy stories outside of your "norm?"

Have you read anything by Tanith Lee?
